There lived old man fox. Old man fox. He went along. He was looking for food, for something to eat. Lying in one spot, from where should he take food? He lived alone at home for a long or a short time and thought: “Once I had a friend. My friend was old man bull. His house is buried, he never comes out. I’ll go to see whether he is dead or alive.” Well, fine. He went there and looked. He was apparently alive. He ran around the house, shouting: “Are you there, old man bull?” “It’s me, it’s me. Is that you, fox?” “It’s me, it’s me. Don’t you have the strength to come out?” “I’d like to come out, but I don’t have the strength to come out.” The fox said: “From here I’ll dig on the outside with my hands and feet. I’ll keep on digging the earth and you kick and thrust from inside. With the strength of two persons we’ll somehow make a hole.” They dug, they made noise, they worked hard. Old man bull came out. He was completely worn out. As was necessary, old man bull tidied himself, wiping off the dirt or whatever. He ate a bit of grass or something.

Just as the master ordered, she went. She put on her girlish fur belt, she put on her girlish sable belt and set off to her father’s. She came to her father’s house and he said: “Girl, what bad thing has happened? In the course of a human life you haven’t come, in the course of your woman’s life you haven’t come to me, what terrible thing has happened that you have come to me?” “Your son-in-law,” she said, “sent me. He said: your father should send me an endless horsehair, an endless cow hair.” “Well, if it’s like that, daughter,” he said, “where he gets to, just such a thing will be.” But this endless horsehair, this endless cow hair was asking for war, for war. This is the name, that’s what people say, people call war an endless horsehair, an endless cow hair. When spring comes, horses and cows start to lose their hair and it does not stop, it falls out. He has many people, that is why he asks.

He came to his brother. “Would you,” he said, “ give me one horse? My horse has died.” “What?! Why should I give you a horse? Why did you kill your horse? You have to feed and heal it.” “So, how shall I heal it? It got sick and died.” He did not want to give a horse, what can you do? “Where should I take a horse from?” asked the elder brother, “I have none.” He had a hundred horses and would not give even one. “Well, alright,” thought the other. He went home. His aunt became ill, seriously ill, she was all hunched over. He thought: “I will take the horse-skin, the dry horse-skin. There’s a city here. I’ll take it to the city and sell it. Maybe someone will buy it for money, for kopecks, so that I can buy bread.” He wrapped it in a little sack, it cracked, it squeaked. A horse-skin is like that. When it dries it crackles. He took it and shoved it into the sack. He shoved it into the sack, put it on small sleds and took it to the city to sell it.
