Once there lived an old man Kuzma. His name was Kuzma. He was completely alone, he had no one. He had no wife, the poor devil, he had no wife, he was all alone, he had one horse. In the summer he cut grass for the horse. He cut and cut and then sat down to smoke a pipe. He arranged a rope on his knees. He smoked his pipe. Mosquitoes bit his head, his bald head. He had no hair. He smacked his head with his hand and the mosquitoes rolled down onto the rope. He counted them, all of twenty mosquitoes. He smoked his pipe.

Suddenly a good old man could be heard coming on broad skis. The skis could be heard knocking together. The poor squirrel wept: “Yesterday,” she said, “the Khanty man brought me and those living in the forest to tears.” The old man stopped and stroked his beard: “What happened to you?” “What happened to me? They tried to eat my children.” Then he spoke and knocked one ski on the other. He went on. Then she said: “Children, don’t be frightened. When we return home in the fall, all of our children will live well.”
