Then the wood grouse flew up and came to the heavenly father, that’s how it was. “The girls who gathered berries,” it said, “ate all of my seven nestlings. What am I to do?” Then the heavenly father turned to it: “How so?” He then made a wind: “Let everybody in the middle of the Ob die.” The seven girt down in the boot and got ready to push off. It was quiet, a stillness prevailed. They went as far as the middle of the Ob, sat down in the boat and got ready to push off. It was quiet, a stillness prevailed. They got as far as the middle of the Ob and then a strong wind arose and they all died. The wood grouse was happy and content and went along the path with songs and tales. The girls had all died.

Their grandmother says: “Don’t go. If you go, the wolf will find you. The wolf will eat you then.” Then the elder brother says: “Why will the wolf eat us? When we go into our house in the hollow of the larch tree, the wolf will never get at us.” All at once the mother started to cry, the mother cried: “Sons, why will you go so far? When I die, father has gone, and if your mother dies you won’t find the place of her bed.” Fine. That’s how it was.

So, fine. Be that as it may, there were still things to do. They went back on the old path. Their flesh, all that had fallen off before while they were underway, came back. They became whole humans once again. The grandmother’s grandson had gotten further, he was no longer visible. What had fallen off the town hero’s son also became whole again, skis appeared, he was on skis. The grandmother’s grandson was lost to view. He must have gone far. The town hero’s son ran along the path, he went along. He did not know, where his land remained. If he did not run along this path, where would he come to? Oh, all of a sudden the town hero’s son came out to a glade. He saw that in the middle of the glade some sort of a house was standing. He went up to it, he rushed along the ski path, he arrived. Behind the house a larch tree was standing. The man arriving before him had hung his skis and bow on the larch branches. He also hung up his skis, he took them and hung them up on the larch. The grandmother’s grandson had not hung his up before, he had put them below on the ground.
